How to Install a WordPress Theme

Once you have a fresh install of WordPress on your domain name you will notice that the default theme provided with the installation may not fit your personality, or be good for your online business. However there are plenty of free, or premium WordPress themes available to install on your website. You may even have a designer create a custom design for you, however some designers will not install the design.

Supplies Needed:

  • FTP Software. In this tutorial we will use filezilla.
  • Your custom, free, or premium theme.
  • Cpanel or FTP log in information.

Step 1: Download Theme Zip File

Most themes will come in a compressed zip file. You will need to download this file to your computer and then unzip the file.

Step 2: Upload Files to Your Domain

Next you will need to open your FTP software, and browse to the directory:
/public_html/wp-content/themes.

Then drag and drop the theme files to this directory:

Step 3: Activate Your Theme

Then log into your WordPress Dashboard and activate your theme. Access to your theme is found in the Appearance box of your Dashboard:

You can first preview the theme before activating it in order to make sure everything looks fine or you can click on the link that says “activate” to finish the installation of your theme:
